Partnership with the Neurotrauma Impact Science Laboratory, leading experts in the field of head injuries

Player safety is a top priority at CCM. Following a "Safety Summit" 5 years ago, with experts in the field of head injuries, CCM signed an agreement with the Neurotrauma Impact Science Laboratory at the University of Ottawa. Scientist at the NISL are leading crash-test analyses to establish the relationship between helmet performance and head injuries. This highly advance laboratory's tests and simlulations are well beyond current protocols for helmet research. Through the research, CCM is learning more about better managing all types of impacts to create better products as the game evolves.

Holistic approach to developing helmets

CCM always makes safety a priority when developing helmets. In taking a holistic approach to design, many factors are considered throughout the development process. All of our helmets are designed to manage multiple types of impacts at varying intensities. Fit and comfort are also key components when creating a safe helmet and "fit testing" is integral to the development process.

Scientists indicate that brain injuries and concussions are mainly due to linear and rotational accelerations of the brain. No hockey helmet can prevent or eliminate the risk of head injury, including concussions.

Where does CCM do helmet research and testing?

In addition to doing helmet research at our own headquarters in Montreal, CCM is partnered with the Neurotrauma Impact Science Laboratory at the University of Ottawa. The collaborative research partnership ensures that CCM helmets are independently tested for safety and meet the facility’s high standards. It further underlines CCM’s commitment to player safety and ongoing research and development within the sport of hockey.

CCM helmets and components are tested for quality control at the CCM R&D lab in Montreal, Quebec or at our factory lab in China.

All third party validation for certification is done at CSA and/or HECC specific labs.

Why are helmets tested?

Helmets are tested to make sure they are globally compliant to any ice hockey standard.

The raw materials used to build helmets are tested to ensure they meet safety, performance and durability criteria. Helmets are continuously tested throughout the production process to ensure that every product offers the same level of performance and a consistent fit.

How does CCM do helmet testing?

In addition to established helmet standard tests, CCM has developed its own extensive list of protocols to which all helmets must adhere. CCM performs simulated tests to duplicate potential stress on a helmet, including extreme transport conditions, fluctuating temperatures, body checks, flying pucks and tossed hockey bags.
