How to choose the right size of shin guards?

Choosing the right size of hockey shin guards is important to ensure both protection and comfort during your game. Which shin guard you need depends on your level and age, but, generally speaking, the shin guard should fit properly around the kneecap and be the right length, so that it protects the ankle too. A good way to check is that you should be able to fit 2-3 fingers between the shin guard and foot. To find the right size shin guards, you need to measure the distance from the middle of your knee (kneecap) to the top of your skate. Do this when sitting down with your knee bent at a 90 degree angle. This will give an accurate indication of how the guard will fit when you're skating. It's important to try on the shin guards when wearing your ice skates. The lower guard should sit just above the tongue of the skate to provide protection without restricting with your movement. If the shin guard sits too far down over the ice skate, this can limit your mobility, while if it's too short, part of your leg will not be protected. The shin guard should be comfortable and not slide around, but shouldn't be so tight that it rubs or presses hard and feels uncomfortable. Make sure your knee fits correctly in the shin guard kneecap for maximum protection. Get into a crouching position (knees slightly bent and feet hip-width apart) and check that the protection does not restrict your movement. Shin guards usually have straps or Velcro that let you adjust the fit. Make sure the shin guards are stable without being too tight."

How long should the shin guards be?

To get measurements for the shin guard, sit down with your knees bent at a 90 degree angle. Measure the distance from the centre of your kneecap to the top of the ice skate. This will give a good indication of how the shin guard will fit when you're skating. Generally speaking, there should be room for 2-3 fingers between the lower edge of the shin guard and your foot. This will ensure that the shin guard does not interfere with your movement but still protects your ankle.

Wide or narrow shin guards?

Choosing a wider or narrower shin guard is entirely about personal preference. A wider shin guard covers a larger part of the leg, while a narrower shin guard does not cover as much but still protects the knees and shins.
